Assessment & Therapy

I predominantly support children who have deafblindness/multi-sensory impairment, sensory impairment or multiple disabilities. I usually work with children up to the age of 18.

I can provide

  • Communication assessments, including communicative strengths and needs, choosing and using communication systems, development of communication skills.
  • Dysphagia assessment (eating and drinking), including strengths and needs, development of eating and drinking skills.
  • Support for Education, Health, and Care plans
  • Support for dispute in Special Educational Needs and Disability provision (mediation and tribunals)
  • Therapy programme development and monitoring
  • Direct regular therapy can only be provided within my local area
  • Specialist assessments compliant with Care and Support for Deafblind Children and Adults Policy Guidance (2015)’

I am experienced at working with families and children with:

  • Deafblindness (co-occurring hearing and vision impairment)
  • MDVI (Multiple Disabilities Vision Impairment)
  • PMLD (Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities)
  • Cerebral Palsy
  • Autism with additional needs (such as learning disabilities or sensory impairment)
  • Down’s Syndrome
  • Epilepsy
  • Other low incidence conditions (CHARGE syndrome, Usher syndrome, CMV, Meningitis, Zellweger spectrum disorders)

  • Sign language (Makaton, British Sign Language, Sign Supported English, Tactile sign language)

I also collaborate with a group of colleagues to provide multi-disciplinary assessments, this includes specialist teachers of sensory impairment (MSI, VI, deaf), OT etc.

I am an experienced trainer and have worked with family groups, school teams, project teams, therapists, and school and service leaders.  I can design training to meet your specific needs, aims and objectives.  I use a range of methods to engage participants and provide an evaluation of the impact and outcomes of any package.

I can provide training about:

  • Communication approaches and strategies
  • Getting the best out of mealtimes
  • Deafblindness, multiple disabilities, and other rare conditions
  • Adapting communication approaches for autism and sensory impairment
  • Adapting sign language for people with deafblindness
  • Storytelling and personal narratives

I also collaborate with colleagues to provide recognised courses, together we provide:

  • Accredited Intervenor training
  • The National Sensory Impairment Partnership Regional Centre of Expertise for MSI
  • The National Sensory Impairment Partnership Tactile Sign Language Course – In practice

I have experience in developing, managing and evaluating different projects, including research projects, grant-funded projects, service development projects and sector collaborations.

I am interested in undertaking a range of projects including

  • projects building sector or organisational capacity
  • developing information and advice
  • written articles and publications
  • research – particularly intervention or communication-related projects
